Our History
The 1970s are remembered as a time when Turkish citizens traveled abroad for advanced treatments such as open-heart surgery and cancer care.
With a group of fellow doctors who shared his vision and determination, Prof. Cem’i Demiroğlu founded the Haseki Cardiology Institute at Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty in 1974. Over the years, this institute has made significant contributions to Turkey and marked the beginning of a successful journey.
The Birth and Growth of Florence Nightingale Hospital
Florence Nightingale Hospital was established in 1989 as a small yet ambitious healthcare institution with 50 beds and an annual capacity of 250 open-heart surgeries. Thanks to increasing support, trust, and successful work, Florence Nightingale expanded its facilities to meet international standards, growing to 302 beds with an annual capacity of more than 2,000 open-heart surgeries.
The Avrupa Florence Nightingale Hospital, the second hospital of Group Florence Nightingale, became one of Turkey’s major healthcare institutions, actively serving in all medical branches, including pediatrics, dental and maxillofacial surgery, gynecology, and ophthalmology.
In 1997, Gayrettepe Florence Nightingale Hospital and its Comprehensive Cancer Center were opened in partnership with American collaborators. The infrastructure also enables crucial joint boards and conferences with international counterparts via telemedicine.
Building on years of successful results and experience, Florence Nightingale established a university in 1998, later renamed Istanbul Bilim University in 2006. As the first thematic healthcare university in Turkey, it currently enrolls more than 3,000 students.
