UK Patient Receives Life-Saving Liver Transplant at Florence Nightingale Hospital

A UK man who was deemed too ill for a liver transplant in his home country has received a life-saving operation at Florence Nightingale Hospital in Istanbul. Zahid Anwar, 61, from Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, was suffering from Hepatitis B and his condition had deteriorated to the point where UK doctors believed he was not eligible for a transplant.12

Anwar’s son, Hamza, refused to give up hope and began researching transplant options abroad. After contacting Florence Nightingale Hospital, the family was told that a transplant was possible using Hamza as a living donor.23 The family quickly arranged for a private air ambulance to transport Zahid to Istanbul, where he and his son underwent successful 12-hour operations on August 14th.34

Hamza donated 70% of his liver to his father, a larger portion than usual due to the severity of Zahid’s condition. The surgery was a success and Zahid is now recovering well.4
